Why a stairlift

A stairlift lets you keep the home you already know.

Most people don’t think about their stairs until they become the one part of the house that’s hard to trust. A stairlift changes that, without changing anything else about where you live.

For a lot of our customers, a stairlift is less about a piece of equipment and more about a decision not to move house. Downsizing or moving into supported housing brings its own cost and upheaval, and for many people the family home is worth holding onto. A properly fitted stairlift removes the one obstacle, the stairs, that makes staying put feel risky.

It’s also a safety decision. Stairs are one of the most common places for a fall at home, and the risk goes up with age, after a hospital stay, or with conditions that affect balance and strength. A stairlift takes that risk off the table entirely, for whoever in the house needs it, without anyone having to change how the rest of the house is used.

Choosing a stairlift

Which type of stairlift do you need?

It comes down to your staircase, not your budget. Here’s how the three options differ.

Straight Stairlifts

For a staircase with no bends, corners or half-landings. The rail is off-the-shelf, so it’s usually the quickest and most affordable option to fit.

Curved Stairlifts

For stairs with a bend, corner, spiral or half-landing. The rail is custom-manufactured to follow your exact staircase, so no two are quite the same.

Reconditioned Stairlifts

A genuine way to lower the cost. Every reconditioned lift we fit is stripped down, tested and re-certified, with the same warranty as new.

Cost

What affects the cost of a stairlift?

There’s no single price list, every quote is based on your actual staircase and needs. These are the factors that move the number most.

Straight or curved

Curved rails are custom-manufactured to your staircase, so they cost more than an off-the-shelf straight rail.

Length of the staircase

A longer rail, or a staircase with more than one flight, means more material and more fitting time.

New or reconditioned

A reconditioned stairlift, fully tested and warranted, typically costs less than an equivalent new one.

Seat & features

Extras like a powered swivel seat, folding rail sections or a wider seat add to the base price.

Access for fitting

Tight stairwells, awkward turns or extra structural work can add time, and cost, to the install.

Grant funding

A Housing Adaptation or Mobility Aids Grant can cover a large part of the total, before you get to the final figure.

We can’t quote a figure without seeing your stairs. Anyone who does hasn’t measured them. A free home survey gives you an exact, written price with no obligation to go ahead.

New or reconditioned

Buying new vs. buying reconditioned.

Both are genuine options, not a compromise either way. It usually comes down to budget and how soon you need it fitted.

New Stairlifts

Built to order for your staircase, with the widest choice of colour, seat style and features. The right fit if budget isn’t the deciding factor.

Reconditioned Stairlifts

Previously fitted, fully stripped down, tested and re-certified before it goes anywhere near your stairs. Comes with a full warranty and can often be fitted sooner, at a lower cost.

Stairlift grants

Grant support toward the cost of your stairlift.

Common questions

Buying questions, answered honestly.

Don’t see yours? Ask us directly. We’ll tell you plainly if a stairlift isn’t the answer.

How long does the whole process take, from first call to a fitted stairlift?

For a straight stairlift, often within a week or two once you’re ready to go ahead, since the rail is off-the-shelf. A curved stairlift takes longer, usually several weeks, because the rail is manufactured specifically for your staircase after the survey.

Can I get grant funding towards the cost?

Many of our customers qualify for either the Housing Adaptation Grant or the Mobility Aids Grant, which can cover a large part of the total. See our full grant guide for eligibility and how the application works.

Is it worth buying reconditioned, or should I always go new?

Reconditioned isn’t a downgrade, it’s fully tested, re-certified and warranted the same as new. It usually makes sense if you want to keep costs down or need something fitted sooner; new makes sense if you want the widest choice of features and finish.

Do I need to redecorate or make any structural changes first?

No. The rail fixes to the treads of the stairs themselves, not the wall, so there’s no structural work involved and nothing to prepare beforehand.

What if I’m still not sure whether a stairlift is the right move?

That’s exactly what the free survey is for. We’ll look at your stairs and your situation and tell you honestly, including if we think a stairlift isn’t the answer for you.

Can you give me a price over the phone?

Not an accurate one. Cost depends on your staircase, so we always base a written quote on a free home survey rather than guess a figure that turns out wrong once we see the stairs.
