How the grants work

Two national schemes. We’ll help you find the right one.

Grant funding for stairlifts in Ireland comes through your local County Council, under two schemes run by the Department of Housing. Which one applies to you depends on your circumstances, not your county.

€8,000

maximum grant

Housing Adaptation Grant for People with a Disability

For adapting a home to meet the needs of someone with a physical, sensory or intellectual disability, including fitting a stairlift. The amount awarded is means-tested against gross household income, so two households can qualify for very different amounts.

€6,000

maximum grant

Mobility Aids Grant Scheme

A faster, simpler scheme aimed at older people and people with mobility difficulties, covering items like stairlifts, grab-rails and level-access showers. It’s designed to move quicker than a full adaptation grant, with a more straightforward application.

1
We check eligibilityAge, home ownership, income. A quick call is enough to know which scheme fits, and roughly what you could receive.
2
Free survey and written quoteYour council needs this to process the application. We provide it at no cost and no obligation.
3
Fitted and supportedOnce your council approves the grant, we install cleanly and take care of the rest.

Grant amounts and income thresholds are set nationally but administered locally, and can be revised by the Department of Housing from year to year. The figures above reflect the current scheme maximums at time of writing, always confirm the exact amount you’d qualify for with your County Council, or ask us and we’ll check for you.

Who qualifies

Do I qualify for a grant?

Every application is assessed individually by your County Council, but most households we work with fall into one of these situations.

You own the home, or hold an eligible tenancy

The property must be your normal place of residence. Homeowners and private tenants with the landlord’s consent can both apply.

There’s a genuine mobility or medical need

A GP or occupational therapist confirms the stairlift is needed for a real difficulty using the stairs, not just a preference.

Household income decides the amount

The Housing Adaptation Grant is means-tested on combined gross household income. We’ll help you work out roughly where you sit before you apply.

Local authority tenants can still qualify

If you’re a council tenant, the process runs through your council’s housing section rather than the standard grant application. We’ll point you the right way.

Not sure which category you’re in? Call us before you fill in a single form. We’ll ask a few quick questions and tell you honestly which scheme applies, and what you’re likely to receive.

How it works

From application to fitted stairlift.

The grant has to be approved before work starts. Here’s the order things happen in.

1

Apply to your Council

Complete the grant application for your local authority. We can help you fill it in and gather the supporting documents.

2

Assessment & approval

Your council may arrange an occupational therapist or engineer’s assessment, then confirms your approved grant amount in writing.

3

Free survey & quote

We measure your stairs and give you the formal written quote your council needs to release the grant. No cost, no obligation.

4

Fitted, then grant paid

We install once you have written approval. Payment timing varies by council, we’ll explain exactly how it works for yours before you commit.

Common questions

Grant questions, answered honestly.

Don’t see yours? Ask us directly. We’ll tell you plainly if you’re unlikely to qualify.

What’s the difference between the two grant schemes?

The Housing Adaptation Grant for People with a Disability covers a wider range of home adaptations and is means-tested, so the amount you receive depends on household income. The Mobility Aids Grant Scheme is narrower, aimed specifically at things like stairlifts and grab-rails, and is generally quicker to process. We’ll tell you which one fits your situation.

Do I have to own my home to qualify?

No. Homeowners and private tenants (with their landlord’s consent) can both apply. If you’re a tenant of your local authority, the process is slightly different and runs through your council’s housing section directly, we can point you the right way.

Is there an income limit or means test?

The Housing Adaptation Grant is means-tested against combined gross household income, which determines the percentage of costs covered. The Mobility Aids Grant Scheme has its own, simpler income criteria. Exact thresholds are set nationally and can change, so we always check the current figures with you rather than quoting from memory.

Do I need a letter from my GP or occupational therapist?

Usually, yes. Most councils want confirmation from a GP, occupational therapist, or in some cases a public health nurse, that the stairlift is needed for a genuine mobility difficulty. We can tell you what your council typically asks for.

Can I get the stairlift installed before the grant is approved?

We’d strongly advise against it. Grants are approved before work starts, and installing first can mean losing your entitlement to the funding entirely. We’ll always give you a written quote for the application first, then install once you have approval.

Does Western Mobility help with the application itself?

Yes. We help you complete the forms, gather supporting documents, and provide the free survey and written quote your council needs, at no cost and no obligation, whether or not you go ahead with us.

Can a reconditioned stairlift still be grant-aided?

In most cases, yes, the same schemes can apply. Every reconditioned stairlift we fit is fully tested, re-certified and warranted, so it’s treated the same as new for grant purposes. Ask us to confirm for your specific council.

How long does approval usually take?

It varies by council and how busy their grants section is. It’s rarely instant, so it’s worth applying as early as possible once you know a stairlift is likely. We can give you a realistic sense of current waiting times when you call.
